Director of Policy & Government Relations

The Minnesota Multihousing Association (MMA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Policy & Government Relations to lead its advocacy efforts and strengthen its voice in legislative and regulatory matters. This role is critical in shaping public policy to support the multifamily housing industry while fostering strong relationships with government officials, community leaders, and key stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of legislative processes, a passion for housing-related issues, and a proven track record in government relations and policy advocacy.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Policy Development and Advocacy:

    • Lead the development and implementation of MMA’s policy agenda to address industry challenges and opportunities.
    • Analyze and monitor legislative, regulatory, and political developments impacting the multifamily housing sector.
    • Draft policy briefs, position papers, and testimony for use in legislative and public forums.
    • Advocate for MMA’s positions before local, state, and federal policymakers.
  2. Government Relations:

    • Build and maintain strategic relationships with elected officials, regulatory agencies, and community organizations.
    • Represent MMA in meetings, hearings, and other key events to advance the association’s priorities.
    • Serve as a liaison between MMA and government entities, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  3. Member Engagement:

    • Educate and engage MMA members on legislative and regulatory issues.
    • Organize advocacy campaigns, including member mobilization and grassroots efforts.
    • Provide regular updates to members on policy developments and their implications.
  4. Strategic Leadership:

    • Collaborate with the executive team to align advocacy goals with organizational priorities.
    • Develop and execute long-term strategies to enhance MMA’s influence and visibility.
    • Act as a thought leader on housing policy issues, contributing to public discourse and industry dialogue.
  5. Research and Analysis:

    • Conduct in-depth research on housing-related policies and trends.
    • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Evaluate the impact of advocacy efforts and recommend adjustments as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • At least 7 years of experience in government relations, public policy, or a similar role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of legislative and regulatory processes at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and achieve policy outcomes.
  • Experience in the housing or multifamily industry is a significant advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and advocacy tools; familiarity with CRM software is a plus.
